Spitfire designer should receive a posthumous knighthood - Huhne
Eastleigh Lib Dem MP Chris Huhne has written to Tony Blair urging him to grant a posthumous knighthood to R J Mitchell.
Mitchell designed the Spitfire aircraft which played a vital part in defeating Hitler's Luftwaffe in the Second World War. The Spitfire first flew from Eastleigh Airfield seventy years ago last week. Mitchell died before the start of the war and never received official recognition for his role in the defeat of Nazism.
"The Spitfire stands as a symbol of British resistance against Nazi tyranny and played a crucial role in winning the war," says Chris Huhne. he called for official recognition of R J Mitchell's "brilliant and enduring legacy."
