Eastleigh MP and Lib Dem Environment spokesman, Chris Huhne and Winchester MP, Mark Oaten will be among the speakers at a public meeting in Winchester this week to discuss climate change.

The event, which is part of Friends of the Earth's The Big Ask climate campaign, also marks the launch of the Winchester branch of Friends of the Earth.

Friends of the Earth is campaigning for a new law that would require the Government to cut UK carbon dioxide emissions by three per cent every year, a move supported by 340 MPs, over half the MPs in Westminster. All of Hampshire's Lib Dem MPs have signed the motion but only two local MPs from other parties have done so.

Environment campaigners have also thanked Sandra Gidley MP for supporting a vital piece of environmental legislation in parliament.

The Sustainable Energy Partnership, which represents all the major environmental and 'fuel poverty' campaign organisations thanked Sandra for supporting the Climate Change and Sustainable Energy Bill.

Partnership Organiser Ron Bailey said:

'It is absolutely vital that this Bill succeeds. Emissions of CO2 continue to increase and rising energy prices will mean that even more people are suffering from cold homes and fuel poverty this winter. This Bill contains practical measures to deal with both problems."
